Introduction

"The customer is king" is truer today than ever before. As the quality of life improves, demand for better-quality services and products also increases. It is now generally agreed that the required level of quality can be built into the product only through the use of a proper quality management system, and not by inspection at the delivery stage. Business competition requires quality to be achieved and enhanced at the most economical cost by eliminating wasteful practices. Fortunately, with the advent of the ISO 9000 series of standards, it is now possible to measure tangibly the effectiveness of quality management in an enterprise. The objective of the 9000 series is to provide a mechanism for: determining and fulfilling customer needs, preventing errors where possible and, where not, correcting them in such a way that the process is improved and customers` needs are consistently met at the lowest cost. The following articles give a brief overview of quality management concepts and the import of the various clauses of the ISO-9001/1994 standard and the associated implementation considerations.
