Dr.A.S.Firoz was born on 19th September, 1959 and is an Indian by birth. He is married since 1992 and has a son born in 1993. He has brilliant academic achievements to record. He has a first class graduation (honours) in Chemistry to be followed by first class degrees in M.A. and M.Phil. in Economics from the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) at New Delhi in India. He then went on to complete his Doctorate in Economics and was awarded the coveted Ph.D. by the same University. During his days as a student, he participated in various student welfare, social and cultural activities and was elected as Vice President of the JNU Students' Union. He was also the Convenor of the JNU Discussion Forum for several years. He had taken keen interest in sports and had played soccer, badminton and cricket. He has gardening and music as hobbies. He has several research works of
value to his credit. The dissertation entitled, 'Enterprise Autonomy and
Incentives in a Socialist Economy : Some Developments in the USSR and Hungary'
from the Centre for Soviet and East European Studies, School of International
Studies, JNU, that fetched him his M.Phil. degree was a highly praised
research work on the subject. His Ph.D. thesis on a complex subject entitled,
'A Study of Certain Analytical Aspects of the Problem of Shortage in Socialist
Economies with Special Reference to the USSR, Hungary and Poland' from
the Centre for Soviet and East European Studies, School of International
Studies, JNU, is a major academic work on the subject.
The Chief Economist is also the Member Convenor of Steel Exporters' Forum of India. He has held many important positions
in high level committees and organisations set up by the Government of
India.
He is a prolific writer and is well known globally for his expertise on the steel industry. He is invited to address international conferences regularly. He presented papers in seminars and conferences held in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Port of Spain, Bangkok, Phuket, Calcutta, New Delhi and Mumbai. He writes regularly for major economic dailies like The Observer of Business and Politics, The Economic Times, The Financial Express, The Business Line ; academic journals like the Economic and Political Weekly and web sites like Indiainfoline.com in India.
